Week 19: "It's all over"

RECAP:  
Massan talks with Mr. Tanaka about how his investors told him to reduce his employees by half. He wonders why Kamoi Shop’s whisky is selling so well but then comes to the conclusion that it must be the age of their whisky. They have several different ages of whisky allowing them to blend them to make different flavors. Massan goes on to say that the whisky they are making today will be even more valuable in the future.

RECAP:  
DOUKAH WHISKY is not doing well and Massan is receiving requests from all the wholesalers he gets his materials from for their payments. Toshio, Hana, and Kazuma all tell Massan not to worry about paying their salaries, as it is more important to pay the wholesalers first. They tell him not to worry, that they will get through this together.

RECAP:  

Everyone is by the hearth in Kumatora’s home eating as they begin to talk about what to name Massan’s whisky. Toshio suggests “Kita no Ichiban” (North’s #1). Kumatora suggests “Kita no Tonosama” (Northern Lord). Hana suggests they think of something that doesn’t use “Kita” (north) but Kumatora insist that they should include it because of Hokkaido being in the north.

RECAP:  
Nonomura tries Massan’s whisky, noting that it is quite strong, but Watari refuses to even try it.

In the midst of all this tension in the room, Emma returns home and introduces herself. Ellie tells them that she would like to treat them to some lunch and has Emma help her prepare.

Ellie brings in Nonomura and Watari’s lunch and they are thoroughly impressed with the flavor. Watari notes that Massan must be happy and that he must make sure to keep Ellie and Emma happy too. Massan responds that that is the exact reason why he would like them to allow him to make and sell his whisky.

RECAP:  
The mysterious customer who asked for a taste of Massan’s whisky is invited to Massan’s house. He is a writer by the name of Uesugi Ryunosuke. He tries Massan’s whisky and says that it is delicious, pointing out that the smoky flavor is just right, reminding him of Highland Celt whisky. Both are excited and pleased to hear that the other knows of Highland Celt whisky.

RECAP:  
It’s been 8 years since Massan and Ellie have moved to Hokkaido. Japan is still deep in war with China.

One morning, Massan is eating breakfast as he reads the newspaper when Emma, who is now 15, comes in. She sees the articles in the paper about the war and complains that the war is still dragging on. After she leaves for school, Massan wonders if maybe Emma says a little too much of her own opinions but Ellie reminds him that they raised her to speak her mind freely.

RECAP:  
Before returning to Hokkaido after Eichiro's funeral, Massan stops by to see Mr. Nonomura and Mr. Watari to talk to them about getting a distillation machine to make apple brandy. Mr. Watari asks if he isn't actually planning to use the machine to make whisky but Massan swears that he won't make whisky until they give him their permission.

RECAP:  
After hearing of Eichiro's death, Ellie and Massan rush to Osaka. They show up and find Mr. Kamoi standing alone in the storehouse. He thanks them for coming from such a long distance, and Ellie just goes up to him with tears in her eyes and hugs him. Massan tries to express his condolences but Mr. Kamoi asks him to skip the formalities. He then pours them each a glass of the whisky that Eichiro was working on before he died and they both take a sip. Mr. Kamoi asks them how it tastes and they both say that it is good, but Mr. Kamoi contradicts them by saying that it's not good. He says it is still young (as was his son), too young.

RECAP:  
Hana tells Toshio that she likes him and asks him how he feels. He is so surprised by her confession that he can't find the words to respond right away but he then finally starts to tell her his life story. His father wasn't around growing up and his mother passed away 20 years ago leaving him with no knowledge about how a marriage or family life is supposed to be like.

Hana asks Toshio what he thinks about her marriage proposal set up by her father, and Toshio tries to mention that all though it's good he is tall and a hard worker, Toshio can't see someone who doesn't drink as being a good partner for her. Hana then asks him what kind of man would be a good match for her but Toshio doesn't give her an answer and just tells her that it is for her to decide.

Ellie goes to Massan to talk to him about Hana's marriage proposal but Massan says that it is up to Hana to decide. She then asks if Kumatora is happy about it and Massan responds that he isn't sure. She asks about Toshio next and Massan doesn't understand why she would ask about Toshio (obviously not making the connection that Toshio likes Hana). Ellie explains it to him but he still thinks that Ellie is overthinking it.

Massan and Ellie go to visit Mr. Kamoi to give his letter of resignation and although he had a feeling this would come up sooner or later, he is not happy about it. He asks Massan about his plans for Hokkaido and whether he has the money. Massan tells him that he still needs to come up with 100,000 yen.

It's night and Ellie joins Massan out on the porch. She tries to make small talk and brings up that Massan hasn't been his normal self lately and that he doesn't seem happy. Massan tries to downplay it and tells her that this is the best he can be. Ellie asks if he would like to quit working at Kamoi shop but even her mention of the idea upsets Massan. Ellie just wants to help him though and without him knowing, she goes to visit Mr. Nonomura (their landlord).

Massan has returned to being head of the whisky distillery. Ellie is at home doing dishes when he comes home with a bunch of his coworkers to celebrate his return. Ellie is not happy about this and tells him that she has nothing to prepare for their party. He tells her that she doesn't need to prepare anything and in walks Eichiro with food.

Massan's mother, Sanae, has passed away. Massan visits her alter and as he looks at the whisky that is placed on it, he thinks back to her refusing to drink it. Massan's father, Masashi, is there with him and tells him that she was actually quite supportive of his whisky dream and would even secretly drink the whisky.

RECAP:  
The party is continuing at Kumatora's home. Massan falls asleep but wakes when Kumatora's daughter, Hana, comes to give him a blanket. Massan asks Hana how long this party will go on and she responds saying that with so many people returning from being away from home, it will be pretty late. Hana tells her father that Massan has awoken and Kumatora formally introduces Massan to everyone.

Ellie and Emma greet her but Sanae asks where Massan is and Ellie apologizes that he couldn't make it yet because he is in Hokkaido.
