Recap - Massan Week 15, Ep 85

Massan

Week 15: "We meet, only to part"

Episode 85 (1/12/2015)

RECAP:
Massan's mother, Sanae, has passed away. Massan visits her alter and as he looks at the whisky that is placed on it, he thinks back to her refusing to drink it. Massan's father, Masashi, is there with him and tells him that she was actually quite supportive of his whisky dream and would even secretly drink the whisky.

Masashi continues that it is very difficult to make liquor that people will like. Even he is unable to make sake that is good enough. Massan asks him what he does when he feels that way. His father explains that sake is a living thing and that the person who makes it leaves their own impression on it. If you don't come face to face with the sake you are making, you cannot breathe life into it. You must be patient and work at it slowly. Once you see the satisfaction of your customers, it will make all of your efforts worthwhile.

Ellie is in the kitchen preparing to return home. Sumire and Shimaji try to tell her to stay a while longer but she tells them that Massan has to get back to work. Ellie asks Sumire about school and Sumire tells her about how Sanae talked about it being so remarkable that Ellie could learn the Japanese language as well as cooking since coming here. Ellie tells her that she wishes she could have learned more about the family cooking through Sanae.

Later, Chikako comes to introduce her son to Ellie, the son that Ellie helped deliver.

As they are just about ready to leave, Massan heads for the door when Toshio comes rushing into the house looking for him. They keep just missing each other as they call out each other's name until they finally meet. Toshio asks Massan if he will go back to work with Mr. Kamoi and Massan tells him that Kamoi Shop is the only company that can make whisky in Japan right now. Toshio tells him not to forget that he prefers the Massan who stays strong with his opinions and beliefs.

Massan returns to Kamoi Shop and tells Mr. Kamoi that his mother finally accepted Ellie before she passed away and even supported his dream to make whisky. Mr. Kamoi is happy to hear that and tells him that they must continue to work hard. He asks Massan how Hokkaido was and Massan tells him that he understands the difficulties of selling their products now. He begins to tell Mr. Kamoi about the perfect conditions that Hokkaido has to make whisky and asks to build another distillery up there. Mr. Kamoi is happy to hear that he still has big dreams but that today's environment is too bad to be building another distillery.

Massan then asks if he can return to the whisky making department and Mr. Kamoi is happy to hear it but is strict that he must strive to make whisky that Japanese people can enjoy, which means diverting away from the real whisky that he really wants to make. Massan agrees and Mr. Kamoi allows him back. Massan then goes to meet Eichiro to tell him the news and once everyone sees him, they all welcome him back, but it looks like they have some challenges ahead of them.
