Massan
Week 14: "There is kindness to be found everywhere"
Episode 80 (1/6/2015)
RECAP:
Ellie has gone to Hiroshima after receiving a telegram that Massan's mother Sanae has become critically ill. The doctor mentions that Sanae's condition was quite critical but has since stabilized. Ellie and Emma greet her but Sanae asks where Massan is and Ellie apologizes that he couldn't make it yet because he is in Hokkaido.
Ellie makes a hot toddy for Sanae's cough but Sanae refuses to drink it. However, once everyone leaves the room, Sanae tries the hot toddy.
Meanwhile, Massan is in Hokkaido trying to sell his whisky in front of an inn in Otaru. Unfortunately, he finds that people in Hokkaido have the same reaction to whisky as they did back home. Eventually one man comes up to his booth and asks if the whisky is delicious or not, and since Massan doesn't give him a clear answer he goes inside the inn. Massan goes after him and tries to convince him to buy the whisky but the man responds that he doesn't drink any liquor except for sake. Massan pleads with him saying that if he doesn't sell the whisky, he will lose his job. The man says that if he cannot sell the whisky in Osaka or Tokyo, then what makes him think he can sell it in Hokkaido, but Massan argues that depending on the region, foods and flavors are different, therefore people's likes and dislikes will be different as well.
The man asks him about his hometown and name and Massan tells him his name and that he was born in Hiroshima. He explains that his family owns a sake brewery. The man then introduces himself as Kumatora Morino from Aizu and asks Massan why the son of a sake brewery is working for a liquor company making western liquors? Massan starts explaining passionately about whisky and then Kumatora tells him that he is returning to Yoichi tomorrow and to come along with him. There are many people in Yoichi that like alcohol so he might have better luck there. When Massan asks him how far it is, Kumatora tells him that it is about 5 hours away by walk and although he is worried about the trek, he ends up going with him.
