Massan
Week 19: "It's all over"
Episode 114 (2/14/2015)
RECAP:
Massan talks with Mr. Tanaka about how his investors told
him to reduce his employees by half. He wonders why Kamoi Shop’s whisky is
selling so well but then comes to the conclusion that it must be the age of
their whisky. They have several different ages of whisky allowing them to blend
them to make different flavors. Massan goes on to say that the whisky they are
making today will be even more valuable in the future.
The next morning, Mr. Tanaka leaves for Osaka telling Ellie
that he can return feeling at ease now.
Massan gathers all his employees together to give them the
regrettable news that he has to let half of them go. He explains the dire
situation that the company is facing and begins to call out the names of those
who are to be let go.
Later, Massan is cleaning one of the pot stills when Toshio
comes in and offers to help. Toshio tells Massan that no matter what happens,
he will always stick by him.
Kazuma then rushes in to tell Massan that the Japanese Navy is here. He
runs to the storehouse and meets a young officer who asks to try some of the malt
(unblended) whisky. He looks displeased at the taste but then says that due to
the war, importing western liquor is becoming more difficult, and says that he
will buy all of Massan’s whisky. He also tells Massan that this distillery will
become the designated distillery for the Navy, and says that any whisky made
here will be purchased by the Navy, leaving Massan completely speechless.
After the Navy officer and his men leave, Kazuma mentions
that they can now keep their employees and leaves with Toshio to spread the
good news.
It is now December 8th, 1941, and Japan has
bombed Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Japan is now at war with the Allied Powers, which include
Ellie’s home country, Scotland.
