Massan
Week 19: "It's all over"
Episode 113 (2/13/2015)
RECAP:
DOUKAH WHISKY is not doing well and Massan is receiving
requests from all the wholesalers he gets his materials from for their
payments. Toshio, Hana, and Kazuma all tell Massan not to worry about paying
their salaries, as it is more important to pay the wholesalers first. They tell
him not to worry, that they will get through this together.
The next day, Massan receives a phone call from Osaka.
Nonomura and Watari have requested that Massan come see them and once he
arrives in Osaka, Nonomura asks him why he thinks that his whisky isn’t
selling. When Massan begins to explain, Watari doesn’t want to hear any more of
Massan’s excuses and tells him that has lost the bet asks that he gives up his
company.
After Watari leaves the room, Nonomura sits Massan down and
explains that he doesn’t want Massan to give up his company. He asks that, as
Massan still has six years worth of whisky remaining, he reduce his employees
by half to help lower his debt. Massan doesn’t want to have to resort to this
but understands that he doesn’t have much of a choice.
Massan returns to Hokkaido and thinks about what he must do
for his company and family to survive. He tells Ellie about his predicament and
it shocks her but she supports Massan no matter what. Emma then comes in and
says that she would like to help.
The next day, Massan has a visitor. It’s Mr. Tanaka from
Sumiyoshi Distilleries (Massan’s first workplace after returning from
Scotland). Both Ellie and Massan are delighted to see him and invite him in to
talk. He asks about the condition of Massan’s company and Massan tells him that
it is not going to well. Mr. Tanaka tells Massan that there are always going to
be some bad times for any company and that he just needs to stay motivated and keep
his employees motivated as well.
Ellie then decides to leave to do some shopping, hoping that
Mr. Tanaka will give Massan some good advice while she is out.
