Recap - Massan Week 19, Ep 109

Massan

Week 19: "It's all over"

Episode 109 (2/9/2015)

RECAP:
It’s been 8 years since Massan and Ellie have moved to Hokkaido. Japan is still deep in war with China.

One morning, Massan is eating breakfast as he reads the newspaper when Emma, who is now 15, comes in. She sees the articles in the paper about the war and complains that the war is still dragging on. After she leaves for school, Massan wonders if maybe Emma says a little too much of her own opinions but Ellie reminds him that they raised her to speak her mind freely.

At the distillery, it has been 6 years since Massan started making whisky and things are coming along nicely.

At the barbershop, Kumatora is talking with Susumu and Saburo about Massan’s whisky but Susumu and Saburo say that it is no match for Kamoi Whisky. Kumatora defends Massan by saying that Massan will make the best whisky in the world.

Massan is busy blending his whisky when he finally accomplishes his ideal flavor. He has everyone try it inside Kumatora’s home and Kumatora says that it’s the best. Toshio says that it has Massan’s signature smoky flavor, Hanna is not sure what is considered good, and Kazuma is satisfied with the flavor. Ellie also tries the whisky and says that it is good.

That night, Massan has a concerned look on his face and Ellie comes to ask him what is wrong. He tells her that he is worried about the reception of his own whisky after he had such a bad experience in the past with Kamoi Shop. Ellie tells him to have confidence but he still worries about the fate of his company and its workers if the whisky doesn’t sell. Emma then comes in and tells Massan what she always learned from them, to always challenge and have an adventure. Massan tells her she’s right and smiles.

Emma goes around with Hana to get people to try Massan’s whisky. They go to the barbershop and have Susumu, Saburo, and some of their regular customers try the whisky but no one has anything good to say about it. One unfamiliar customer who is getting a haircut turns around and asks to have a taste, as he is quite fond of whisky. At this, everyone begins to wonder who this man is.
