Week 15: "We meet, only to part"
Episode 89 (1/16/2015)
RECAP:
Massan and Ellie go to visit Mr. Nonomura where they meet Mr. Watari. Mr. Watari is an investor with experience running restaurants and cafes. Previously, Ellie had consulted with Mr. Nonomura about helping Massan out with building a whisky distillery in Hokkaido.
Mr. Watari is astonished at Massan's estimated costs to build the distillery and after getting a feel for Massan's determination he is almost convinced but once he hears that it will take 5 years before the whisky will be ready to be shipped, he tells Massan that he cannot invest.
Disappointed, Massan and Ellie return home and thanks Ellie for trying. Ellie, however, gets an idea and when they go to visit Mr. Nonomura again, she suggests that they produce apple juice since there really isn't any juice products in Japan that don't use any sugar or artificial coloring. Hokkaido is famous for apples and they can use the apples that wouldn't normally be sold due to minor blemishes at a lower cost.
Mr. Watari finally agrees but on once condition, he will give him 200,000 yen and Massan will have to come up with the remain 100,000 yen (100,000 yen would equal 50,000,000 yen in today's money).
On their way home, Eichiro stops buy to talk about Kamoi whisky and mentions that they should include the smoky flavor in their next whisky. Massan tells him though that he is thinking about quitting Kamoi shop to start his own whisky distillery in Hokkaido. This upsets Eichiro greatly as he accuses Massan of abandoning everyone at the distillery, and leaves.
The next day, Massan goes to visit Mr. Kamoi to put in his letter of resignation.
