Week 15: "We meet, only to part"
Episode 90 (1/17/2015)
RECAP:
Massan and Ellie go to visit Mr. Kamoi to give his letter of resignation and although he had a feeling this would come up sooner or later, he is not happy about it. He asks Massan about his plans for Hokkaido and whether he has the money. Massan tells him that he still needs to come up with 100,000 yen.
Mr. Kamoi wishes that he would stay and continue working to make his dream a reality at the Yamazaki distillery but Massan has already made up his mind and tells Mr. Kamoi that in order for him to make the whisky he truly believes in, he must leave Kamoi Shop.
Mr. Kamoi reminds him that things will be difficult for everyone including his employees, family, and Ellie. He explains that Massan is a scientist, he knows everything there is to know about whisky and distilling but when it comes to business, he doesn't have the same passion. He continues to tell Massan that he doesn't have what it takes but Massan is firm saying that he can. Mr. Kamoi eventually asks Massan why he doesn't just lower his head and ask to borrow the money but Massan tells him that is not why he is here. Mr. Kamoi continues to lecture Massan on the importance of realizing that his employees and family must be able to eat while he is starting his business and asks if he really understands this.
Massan just listens to Mr. Kamoi and eventually he gets on all fours and bows with his head as low as possible. Mr. Kamoi just watches him silently and then goes to his desk to write a check for the 100,000 yen. He gives the check to Massan and tells him to take it and go. With tears in his eyes, Massan tells him that he will return the money but Mr. Kamoi tells him that he needn't do that. This money is just his severance pay. He gives Massan some words of encouragement and Massan tells him that he owes everything to Mr. Kamoi and tells him he will never forget him.
Mr. Kamoi tells Ellie not to lose herself no matter what happens or where they end up and if she ever is in trouble, to come to him any time.
They return home and think about the challenge ahead of them when Eichiro comes by the house. He thanks them for helping him find his own path and tells them that now it is his turn to push them along their path and gives Massan his "Whisky Research Room" sign.
