Recap - Massan Week 15, Ep 88

Massan

Week 15: "We meet, only to part"

Episode 88 (1/15/2015)

RECAP:
It's night and Ellie joins Massan out on the porch. She tries to make small talk and brings up that Massan hasn't been his normal self lately and that he doesn't seem happy. Massan tries to downplay it and tells her that this is the best he can be. Ellie asks if he would like to quit working at Kamoi shop but even her mention of the idea upsets Massan. Ellie just wants to help him though and without him knowing, she goes to visit Mr. Nonomura (their landlord).

The new whisky has been put on the market and has been named "Kamoi Whisky Red Label," however, it is not selling either. A meeting is held at Kamoi shop to discuss this failure and Mr. Shirai says that the problem is not advertising but pretty much everything about the process of making whisky from the ingredients to the actual process itself. Mr. Kurosawa comments that this loss of sales is not limited only to whisky. Their wine and beer sales are also falling. Mr. Amano refutes that it is because of whisky's bad reputation that their other products are struggling and suggests that they quit their whisky business altogether. Mr. Kamoi then says, "okay," and tells everyone that they will quit their beer business. Amano is flabbergasted at this as he tells them that they should put more into the beer business and quit their whisky business instead, but Mr. Kamoi is firm that he will not give up on his whisky business and tells Massan to think of what to do next.

Massan is in the distillery full of worry about what to do next. Later, Eichiro comes in and finds Massan collapsed by one of the pot stills. Massan is brought back home and examined by the doctor who finds nothing wrong with him and says that he is probably just overworking himself.

Eichiro expresses his worry about Massan saying that he has become like the smoky-flavorless whisky.

Ellie goes to their room and looks at the maps and pictures of Hokkaido and recalls the enthusiasm that Massan had when he would talk about making whisky. She then makes some apple juice from the apples that were sent from Kumatora. She brings the apple juice to Massan who has awoken and he says that the juice is delicious, bringing him back to life, and apologizes for making Ellie worry so much.

Ellie tells him that he has done enough at this point. He has worked so hard for the sake of Mr. Kamoi, herself, and Emma and that he needn't push himself any further. He breaks down in tears as he explains his whole situation at work having to make whisky that doesn't have a smokey aroma. He just doesn't know what is best for the customers anymore and has lost all his confidence.

Ellie comforts him telling him that he should do what he wants to do from now on and suggests that he leave Mr. Kamoi and make his own distillery.
