Week 8: "Pie in the sky"

Chikako's baby is born and this brings up new concerns for Massan and Ellie. 

RECAP:  

Chikako has her baby and in all the excitement, Masashi stands up and cheers. Sumire notices this and asks him if his back is okay and he responds with a grin that his back is all better now. 

Ellie asks to hold Chikako's baby and Sanae actually hands the baby over to her with no protest at all and then leaves the room to rest. As Ellie introduces herself and plays with the baby, Massan's face goes dark and Chikako notices this. 

A few days later, Ellie begins her work cleaning outside as she greets people as they pass by. Once she finishes she goes back inside the house and runs into Toshio. He has her try the water they use to make the sake and when she does, she says it is delicious. He is thrilled that she can taste the quality of the water.  

Ellie then notices as Chikako calls Massan over to talk privately. She listens from another room as Chikako talks to Massan about coming back to stay at this house permanently. She explains that it would be good for him and Ellie, especially when they decide to have children in the future. She asks that he give up making whisky and come to work for the brewery for the sake of himself and Ellie as well as any children they have in the future. She only wishes the best for him and Ellie. 

Massan tells her that he will think about it and walks out. He sees Ellie sitting down in the other room and notices that she heard the conversation. They talk in their room about it and he tells her that when he saw how happy she was holding Chikako's baby, he realized that he too would like to have children but worries about their child's future as half Scottish and Japanese. 

Ellie tells him that she understands quite well about his concerns for their future child growing up looking slightly different from the rest of the Japanese children and says that it is okay if he wants to stay here. She then tells him that she has work to do and leaves the room with tears in her eyes. 

Toshio brings some of the sake they just test brewed and has Masashi try it. Masashi says that it is pretty good. Masashi asks about his son again and Toshio tells him that he has no motivation at all. Toshio asks him to stop trying to get Massan to take over the brewery and to come back to work as soon as possible. Masashi, however, has no interest in giving the brewery to Massan, which surprises Toshio. 

That night, Massan and Ellie are in bed but neither of them can sleep as they both have renewed determination.
