Recap - Massan Week 8, Ep 48

Massan

Week 8: "Pie in the sky"

Episode 48 (11/22/2014)
Massan and Ellie have made their decision about where to live but they receive some unexpected protests from Massan's father.

RECAP:
Massan and Ellie go to talk with his parents. They are thinking to stay after all since everyone has been suggesting that that would be best. Massan's father asks him if he is going to give up making whisky then. "Didn't Ellie come with you do Japan to help you reach your dreams?" He gets upset with Massan and tells him to stop whining.

Massan is caught off guard by his father's words. His mother, however, gives him an ultimatum. She asks that he comes home, but without Ellie. As long as he stays with Ellie, she asks that he returns to Osaka immediately.

There is no way Massan is willing to leave Ellie and Sanae is well aware of that. Masashi explains that he did not have Massan help out with the brewery so that he could take over. He tells him that there are many times when life doesn't go the way we had hoped but even in those times, we must keep moving. If you do so, you will find your path again.

Ellie is working when Sanae approaches her and asks if she likes children. Ellie answers "yes" and Sanae walks away.

Massan goes back to the brewery and asks Toshio to let him help out some more. He works as hard as he can in the brewery working up quite a sweat. That night as he is cleaning up, Ellie comes in and they talk some more. He says that in this state, he cannot see himself as becoming a father.

Ellie sits down beside him and tells him about her experience so far as a foreigner coming to Japan. She tells him of all the hardships she has endured so far but she then tells Massan that he is always there with her. Even if they have children, as long as they have each other and love each other, things will be okay.

Massan and Ellie have decided to return to Osaka. It's the morning of their departure and they say their goodbyes. Sanae asks him exactly what he plans to do, she doesn't remember bringing up such a son. She then asks Ellie to leave her idiot son and return to her country. She then gets something out of the closet. It's money for Ellie's work as a house maid but Ellie doesn't want to accept it. Massan tries to tell Ellie to just take the money but Sanae tells him that this money is not for him, it's for Ellie. She tells Ellie to use this money to return to her country. Ellie says, "Mother..." but Sanae cuts her short and tells her that she is not her mother and tells her to leave. Ellie just replies "Okay, I will be back again."

After Massan and Ellie leave, the Kameyama family has lunch as usual and Chikako asks her mother how the miso soup is today. Sanae replies that it is good as usual. Chikako then tells her that Ellie made it, surprising Sanae as she says that she was just covering up that it actually wasn't as good today.

Massan and Ellie are walking along holding hands as they sing the worker's song from the brewery. They have regained their determination as they return to Osaka.
