Recap - Massan Week 9, Ep 52

Massan

Week 9: "Nothing ventured, nothing gained"

Episode 52 (11/27/2014)
Things don't go as well as hoped at the meeting between Massan and Mr. Kamoi which is really beginning to get frustrating for everyone involved (including the viewers of this show I'm sure).

RECAP:
Massan is talking with Mr. Kamoi and first asks him why he decided to make "Whikky." Mr. Kamoi gives him two reasons. The first reason is that he wants to spread the word about whisky to the Japanese people, who are still unfamiliar with the liquor. The second reason is that he wants to earn and save up enough money to make real whisky and the earnings from Taiyo Wine are not enough.

Massan still questions whether he really intends to make whisky and Mr. Kamoi says that he wants to amaze the world. Massan then asks him why he wants to make whisky and Mr. Kamoi explains that he has always had a fascination with Western liquor.  When he was 14 years old he was an apprentice for a medicinal liquor wholesaler. The wholesaler dealt with Western liquor and so he decided that someday he wants to make a modern liquor. Once he turned 20 and became independent, no one around him would support his idea. The only one who showed him any support was his mother, who has since passed away. His mother's support still remains as his source of motivation today.

Massan then asks him what kind of whisky he wants to make and Mr. Kamoi answers that wants to make the best whisky in the world, one that could even rival that of Scotland.

Ellie is moved as she listens from outside the room and Catherine, Umeko, and Momoko join her.

Massan pull out his whisky from his bag and pours both of them a glass and says that this is the real whisky that they will be making and the two toast and drink the whisky. After tasting it, Mr. Kamoi mentions that the smell of peat in this whisky is a little too strong for Japanese tastes but Massan argues that if there is no peat aroma then it can't be called whisky. Mr. Kamoi says that it is better if they try to improve it to meet the tastes of Japanese people and Massan gets upset telling him that he doesn't know anything. Mr. Kamoi can't believe his attitude and asks him why he came here today.

Meanwhile, while they are arguing, Ellie and company are still listening from outside of the room and getting restless at where the conversation is going. They keep trying to listen by getting closer and closer to the sliding door and eventually falling into the door causing it to collapse, surprising Massan and Mr. Kamoi.

Mr. Kamoi tells Ellie that he is very sorry but his and Massan's relationship is like water and oil and leaves the restaurant.

Everyone is talking about the whole ordeal at Kohinobori and Catherine gives Massan a hard time as usual. Haru however says that he thinks it's good that it didn't work out because he is not too fond of someone like Mr. Kamoi who makes nude advertisement posters. The police officer drifts off topic and says that he kinda likes the model in the poster.

A female customer then stands up to leave and when she looks toward everyone, they notice that she is the model from the poster. Haru is so surprised that he suddenly says that their shop will now carry Taiyo Wine.

Back at home, Massan and Ellie are eating the takeout food from today's meeting. Ellie asks him if he really thinks he cannot make whisky that can beat Scottish whisky with Mr. Kamoi and Massan replies that it is not about winning or losing. Ellie says that they are not like water and oil and that things could really go well between them but Massan just complains that Mr. Kamoi doesn't know a thing about whisky. Ellie gets upset with him and tells him that the only person who doesn't know anything is Massan. Massan doesn't want to argue anymore and suggests that they just eat for now. Ellie asks him if he understands the reason all of this was prepared and Massan just asks her how much it was and how she paid, which upset Ellie even more.

Someone comes knocking on the door and they immediately know is Yoshi. Massan tells her to turn the lights off and tries to hide but Ellie is not playing along today and answers the door. Massan tries to ask for more time to pay the rent. Yoshi, however, tells them that the landlord, Mr. Nonomura, would like to see them and they worry that they are going to be kicked out.

They go to see Mr. Nonomura and he asks if Massan would be willing to become an instructor at Sumiyoshi Gakuin (institute). The pay would be about 100 yen per month (about 1,000,000 yen in today's currency), which is extremely high.
