Recap - Massan Week 9, Ep 51

Massan

Week 9: "Nothing ventured, nothing gained"

Episode 51 (11/26/2014)
Ellie tries to set up the perfect meeting for Massan to talk with Mr. Kamoi.

RECAP:
Ellie tells her neighbor friends that she wants to treat Mr. Kamoi at her house and asks what kind of food would be good but her friends all tell her that it is best to do it at a formal location. Catherine knows of a good place for her and takes her there.

Ellie explains to the young woman in charge that she would like to treat Mr. Kamoi from Kamoi Shop to a formal dinner there and the woman is surprised to hear it is for Mr. Kamoi.

It turns out that Catherine helped take care of this young woman when she was little so since it is Catherine asking, she decides she will help out. Ellie then asks worriedly about how much it will cost.

Catherine apologized on the way home for not thinking about the cost but Ellie assures her that it is okay, she has some money set aside (the money from Sanae for her housemaid work).

Massan is at Kohinobori peeling potatoes as usual when Catherine shows up and talks about the dinner reception. Massan just grumps as he peels his potatoes. The local police officer even chimes in and asks if he can really make whisky in this economy, even if he does work for Mr. Kamoi.

At Kamoi Shop, Mr. Kamoi is having a meeting about making whisky and he tells everyone how much it will cost to start making whisky. Everyone is surprised at the incredibly high price and Kurosawa is especially concerned about the difficulties of making whisky. However, Mr. Kamoi is not affected by their worry and urges them to start making whisky as soon as possible. He cannot back down after being told that Japanese people cannot make whisky.

That night Ellie tells Massan about her plan to have him meet with Mr. Kamoi. Massan complains at first which irritates Ellie but he then agrees and practices his bow for the meeting. They share a laugh as they remember when Ellie first came to his house in Hiroshima.

The day of the meeting Ellie meets with Mr. Kamoi outside the restaurant and greets him formally in Japanese. Mr. Kamoi points out how much she has become like a Japanese wife.

Massan is already in the room waiting for Mr. Kamoi and once he arrives, Ellie waits and listens from outside the room. Once he arrives, Mr. Kamoi asks Massan to say whatever it is he intends to say and as Massan gets up the courage to speak, he ends up commenting on the weather instead...
