Recap - Massan Week 9, Ep 50

Massan

Week 9: "Nothing ventured, nothing gained"

Episode 50 (11/25/2014)
Ellie helps Mr. Kamoi by interpreting for a meeting he has with a Scottish man but things do not go as well as Mr. Kamoi had hoped.

RECAP:
Ellie is doing some cleaning as she ponders what to do to help Massan. Kurosawa from Kamoi Shop then stops by.

At Kohinobori, Yoshiko and Aki are talking about Taiyo Wine and other things with Massan there being his negative self as usual.

Ellie goes to see Mr. Kamoi to help with interpreting for a meeting with Mr. Andrews, a Scottish man who he had asked to help him find a specialist in whisky making. Mr. Andrews says that he visited distilleries all over Scotland and listened to their thoughts. He asks Mr. Kamoi if he truly intends to make whisky in Japan to which Mr. Kamoi responds that he does. Mr. Andrews then tells him that unfortunately he couldn't find anyone willing to come to Japan. He then tells Mr. Kamoi that it would be impossible for him to make whisky in Japan as it is a Scottish liquor. Mr. Kamoi asks him why he feels that way and Mr. Andrews explains that Japan is at a lower level than Scotland in terms of culture and says they have a long way to go until they can catch up to the West.

Ellie gets upset with Mr. Andrews opinions and tells him that it is not impossible and that Japan will make a whisky that rivals any whisky made in Scotland.

Mr. Kamoi tells him that he sure came a long way just to tell him that it is impossible. He says that the handiwork of Japan is meticulous and refined and that their culture, traditions and warm hospitality is in no way inferior to the rest of the world. He tells Mr. Andrews that they will no longer be needing his services and Andrews gets up to leave. As he walks out the door, he turns around and tells Mr. Kamoi that he heard of a Japanese man who came to Scotland to learn about whisky and poured his heart and soul into it. He asks why Mr. Kamoi doesn't seek that man out. Once he sees that that man is not making whisky in Japan either, maybe then he will see that it is impossible, and leaves.

Mr. Kamoi asks a shocked Ellie if Mr. Andrews was talking about Massan just then and Ellie asks Mr. Kamoi to please give Massan another chance to work with him to make whisky.

Once Ellie returns home, she tells Massan about Mr. Andrews and it upsets him. She tells him that it's obvious that the only way he can make whisky is to work with Mr. Kamoi. Massan is stubborn though and says he can't trust Mr. Kamoi, what with his new "Whikky" product. Ellie is annoyed by his stubbornness and tells him that both Mr. Kamoi and Massan need each other. If they worked together, they would make the perfect pair.

Ellie continues to push him and he leaves the room to go mope on the porch. She follows him and sits down next to him and tells him that she believes in him. Massan finally gives in and agrees to try to work with Mr. Kamoi again.

The next day, Ellie is chatting with her friends when they start talking about "motenashi" (the art of hospitality) and she suddenly gets an idea. She asks her friends how to treat someone in the best way possible and the women are all surprised asking about who, when and why.
