Massan
Week 8: "Pie in the sky"
RECAP:
Massan is hard at work at the brewery with Toshio. Toshio gives him a hard time as usual. Massan asks Toshio if he has ever tried whisky as he talks it up as the best liquor. Toshio responds that its like "pie in the sky" as it would be impossible to make it in Japan. Massan disagrees and says that someday whisky will come to be mainstream in Japan.
Toshio gets upset at Massan's persistence and asks him how he can make whisky when he is depending on his parents.
Sanae sees Ellie working and asks her what her parents would think to see her doing such work. Ellie remains strong though and tells her that she believes in Massan's dream. Sanae comments on her and Massan's stubbornness as she leaves.
Massan asks Ellie if his mom said something to her but she tells him that is okay. Massan mentions that it's like "e ni kaita mochi" (pie in the sky). Ellie asks about the meaning of that phrase and he explains it to her. He says that it describes their situation but she disagrees and says that's not true.
Ellie finishes up making miso soup and goes to get Chikako but finds her on the floor. She is beginning labor. They lay her down on a futon and Sanae comes in and tells Sumire to go get the midwife. Sanae tells Ellie she doesn't need her help but Ellie explains that she had helped her father deliver babies before.
Ellie helps Chikako by telling her to hug one of the zabutons to help her breath and calms her as they listen to the workers singing as they brew next door. Sumire comes back with the midwife and Chikako has her baby, a baby boy.
