RECAP:
Ellie and Massan read the telegram which says that his father is critically ill and that he needs to return home immediately. They borrow some money from their friends so that they can quickly leave to return to Massan's home.
Massan dashes into his home with Ellie close behind him as he searches for his father. Massan asks their very surprised clerk where his father is and he tells him he is in the alter room. Massan takes this to mean that his father has already passed away and immediately goes to the alter and asks his "deceased" father why he passed away so soon before he could even try his whisky.
However, Ellie notices his father standing behind them and tries to get Massan's attention. When she finally gets him to notice that his father is standing behind him, Massan is in shock to see that his father is actually alive and goes to hug him. He hugs his father too tightly, however, and ends up hurting his back so badly that he cannot move.
They lay him down in a futon and the doctor comes and tells them that he will be alright but it will take anywhere from three days to one month for him to recover.
Massan's mother, Sanae, is angry with him for doing this to his father but Ellie tells her that Massan has done nothing wrong and shows everyone the telegram they received. Sumire and Chikako are both surprised by the telegram and ask why she would send that kind of message. She explains that it was the only way to get him to come home and says that she had sent some new rice to Sumiyoshi Distillery but received a thank you letter from Mr. Tanaka's wife which mentioned that Massan had left Sumiyoshi three months prior.
Massan's sisters are shocked by this and ask him what he as been doing for the past three months then. He tells them that he has been washing dishes at a local restaurant and Ellie pipes in that she is also working by putting straps on geta shoes, teaching music and teaching English. Sumire and Chikako are taken aback by the fact that is sounds like Ellie is the one supporting Massan instead of the other way around.
Sanae tells her son that if he cannot make whisky in Osaka then he should come home and take over their brewery but Massan tells her that he hasn't given up on making whisky yet. He tries to stand up to leave and tells Ellie that they are going to return to Osaka but Sanae stops them.
Someone comes to the door and it turns out to be, Toshio, an older classmate of Massan's from when he was in school. He has come to test the brewing of the new rice for their brewery. Massan's father had forgotten that that was scheduled for today and tries to get up out of the futon but is quickly reminded of the pain in his back. He suggests that Massan take his place and Sanae agrees.
Ellie also agrees and even offers to do whatever she can around the house. Sanae still won't see her as the wife of her son though and tells her to leave. Sumire points out that they are short on housemaids and Ellie says she would be happy to work as a housemaid and asks to cook tonight's meal.
She prepares dishes that she learned from her friends in Osaka and everyone is surprised by her skills. She has Chikako try some of the miso soup she made and Chikako says that it's not bad. However, when she asks Sanae to try the soup, Sanae tells her that it is no good. It's not the same flavor they usually have at the Kameyama household. Sanae also tells her that she is not to eat with the family as she is just a housemaid and Ellie keeps a stiff upper lip as she complies.
