Week 8: "Pie in the sky"

By returning home, Massan starts to realize how much he enjoys the atmosphere of the brewery and asks Ellie to stay a little longer while Ellie is doing her best to please Sanae by working as a housemaid for them.

Massan and Toshio are working to move the rice for the sake and Massan worries about how Ellie is doing with his mom. He isn't really helping Yashio and Yashio tells him that he is better off doing it on his own if he isn't going to help.
Massan notices that he has been very cold towards him ever since he returned home and asks what has changed. They used to be like brothers before. Yashio denies being cold and explains that he became so westernized and left the house to go to Osaka and then comes home whenever he pleases and doesn't seem to care about him any more.
The workers at the brewery begin mixing the rice and koji (a yeast made from rice) while singing and Massan just takes in the whole atmosphere with a feeling of nostalgia. Ellie can hear them in the other room as she eats her dinner with the other houseworkers. She asks what the singing is and the clerk explains that they are mashing the yeast for the sake.
Massan's father, Masashi, tries the food that Ellie cooked and says that it is delicious and, as expected, Sanae disagrees. Masashi explains that he didn't make Massan help with the testing of the sake brewing to make him inherit the brewery.
In Massan's room, he is also eating dinner that Ellie cooked and says it is delicious as well. He asks Ellie if it would be okay to stay here a little longer until the testing is finished. Ellie says that is fine and that she will do her best at being a housemaid.
The next day, Massan and Ellie are woken up by Sanae who informs Ellie that she is to wake up before everyone else as there is work to be done. Ellie gets up and begins work. She tries to help Chikako in the kitchen so that she can rest but Sanae comes in and says that she will not be preparing meals today as it is not the right flavor for the Kameyama household. Instead, she has Ellie clean the rooms and tries to explain how to wipe the tatami in the direction of the straw. Ellie doesn't quite understand though, so Sanae gets Chikako to come help explain it to her.
Ellie continues to clean under the supervision of Chikako and is constantly being corrected for things like not wringing enough water out of the cleaning rag, stepping on the wrong part of the tatami or the wood that separates the room. Finally, Chikako asks Ellie to just quit but Ellie refuses to quit and tells her that Massan will make whisky someday and she will become a good wife to him.
Chikako then brings a large bag of tabi socks with holes in them and tells her to repair them all.
