RECAP:
It's the day of the party and Massan puts the bread in the oven to bake. Ellie is making soup with Sachiko as preparations are proceeding along.
As Mr. Nonomura finishes preparations to leave, we can see the remorse in his eyes for not attending the party. Ellie then shows up and yells at him for not going to the party. Mr. Nonomura is angry at her for coming to his house and getting involved in is family problems but Ellie asks him if his daughters are not most important to him.
Back at Massan and Ellie's house, everything is ready for the party and they just need to wait for the bread to finish baking. The atmosphere is pretty dark as they wait for Ellie to return.
Ellie finally makes it back to the house and Natsu immediately asks where her father is. Ellie explains that he wasn't able to make it, disappointing everyone. Ellie then gets the idea to sing a song to lift everyone's spirits and sings "Auld Lang Syne."
After the song they decide to start eating, but before that, Natsu has something to say. She says "Happy birthday Mother!" to Yukiko and Yukiko thanks her and everyone else. Sachiko is still quiet, however, as they have a toast before eating dinner. Sachiko quietly leaves the room and Ellie follows her.
Mr. Nonomura then shows up to the party but remains out of sight around a corner.
Sachiko returns with flowers in her hand and finally says, "Happy birthday Mother," to Yukiko as she hands her the flowers. Yukiko is in tears as she thanks Sachiko. Natsu then notices that her father is there and goes to him to ask why he hasn't gone to work. Sachiko apologizes to her father as he hugs her and apologizes back to her.
Catherine then remember the bread and reminds Massan. Massan frantically tries to remove the bread from the over only to find that it has already burned and everyone laughs.
Back at the Kameyama household in Hiroshima, Massan's sister, Chikako, has returned home to have her baby and Sumire shows her a letter from Ellie. Massan's mother, Sanae, hears the exchange from the other room and doesn't look happy.
The day after the party, Massan has Ellie try some more of his bread but she says that it is "so so" and they aren't sure he can sell it to make enough money to save up to make whisky. Massan starts to compare the yeast used for bread to parents. You absolutely need yeast in order to make bread but once the bread has been baked, the yeast disappears. Ellie asks him if he misses his parents but Massan says that he is okay.
Ellie wonders what her father would say if she could see him. Massan answers that he would say that she married such a good man, making Ellie laugh.
Someone then knocks on the front door and when they go to answer it, a man gives them a telegram which says that Massan's father is critically ill and Massan needs to return home immediately.
