Week 5: "Behind every successful man there is a wise woman"

Episode 29 (10/31/2014)

Today was a pretty emotional episode as we finally receive the answer from the shareholders about the fate of making whisky at Sumiyoshi. Not only are Massan's plans to make whisky squashed but his future employment at Sumiyoshi is also in trouble.

RECAP:

Chogoro and Mr. Fujioka visit the Tanaka household to give their final answer about making whisky. Unfortunately they have bad news, the shareholders have decided not to support the making of whisky. Mr. Fujioka emphasizes that while he really understands how well whisky goes with different foods, he just cannot see it as a potential business as it will take 5 years for them to see any profit. 

That being said, Chogoro asks that Massan gives up his dream to make whisky. Massan can't believe what he is hearing and finally bursts out saying that he cannot give up his dream. At this point, Chogoro asks Ellie to leave, and she does but she stops outside the room to continue listening. 

Chogoro tells Massan that if he can't let go of his dream then he asks that he quit working at Sumiyoshi. Mr. Fujioka adds that if he cannot give up his dream then he cannot allow the marriage between his son and Yuko to happen. This throws Massan over the edge as he darts out of the room with Ellie chasing after him. She tries to tell him that it will be okay but he doesn't want to hear it and asks that she just let him be alone for a bit. 

After the meeting Mr. Tanaka is talking with is wife and daughter and tells them that he will do something about this problem. However, his wife says that all he can do is let Massan go. Mr. Tanaka says that it isn't that easy. She says that this is a serious matter and turns to Yuko for backup but Yuko remains silent. 

Ellie returns home in shock from today's events just as Massan arrives at Kohinobori to start drinking away his pain. Yuko visits Ellie to tell her to tell Massan to do what he wants and to not worry about her situation. Ellie knows that Yuko really wants to marry with Jiro but Yuko tells her to let it go and leaves. 

Catherine finds Massan at the restaurant after he has finished several bottles of sake and tries to ask if he had another fight with Ellie. She starts to ask him what the problem is this time and brings up his obsession with his dream to which he stands up and yells at her. She yells back that she may not know what the problem is but he had better go back home and talk with Ellie about it instead of getting drunk here.

Massan finally returns home and inside, Ellie tells him about Yuko coming over and what she said about him not worrying about her situation. Massan starts asking her if he was wrong to decide to make whisky. So far he has just caused everyone trouble. Ellie responds saying he is wrong, life is an adventure. She is happy to live as long as he is chasing after his dream. She then begins to sing for him as he sobs in her arms.
