Week 5: "Behind every successful man there is a wise woman"

Episode 30 (11/1/2014)

Today is full goodbyes as Massan says farewell to Sumiyoshi Distillery and all of his coworkers and Ellie must say goodbye to Yuko on her wedding day.

RECAP:  

Massan has decided to quit his job at Sumiyoshi Distillery. He turns his letter of resignation in and Mr. Tanaka tells him to forget about him because he will forget about Massan, but one thing he must never forget is his dream. 

Catherine visits Ellie and Ellie tells her that Massan is quitting his job. Catherine tries to complain but Ellie says that it's alright, they made that decision together. 

Massan then goes to the Sado Factory to give the master his plans for the pot stills. He tells him that he will come back for them and the master says that he will wait for him then. 

Ellie tries to visit Yuko to say goodbye but Yuko's mother informs her that she isn't home. 

Massan then makes rounds to say goodbye to everyone at Sumiyoshi. They all wish him well and Yoshiko even tells him that she will come visit him someday to try his whisky once he has made it. 

He tries to say goodbye to Mr. Yaguchi and thank him but Mr. Yaguchi tells him that was born in the wrong country at the wrong time and tells him next time to be born in a Western country some time in the future. Massan tells him that there won't be a next time so he will everything in his power to make whisky on his own in this life. Mr. Yaguchi says that the gods, buddha, and even Christ is laughing at him as he exits the room. 

Massan finishes packing his things from his office and removes the sign board from the front and returns home. Ellie is on the porch sewing a handkerchief. 

It's now Yuko's wedding day and she comes out of the house dressed in her white wedding kimono and headpiece with her makeup all done beautifully. She gets into a rickshaw to head toward the Sumiyoshi Shrine. She suddenly stops the rickshaw when she sees Massan and Ellie. Ellie gives her the handkerchief she was sewing earlier and tells her that in Scotland heather symbolizes protection while the red is a color of celebration in Japan. Yuko tells Massan to take care of Ellie as her rickshaw begins to move forward again. As she leaves, Ellie hugs Massan with tears in her eyes.
