Massan
Week 6: "He who gives to another bestows on himself"
Episode 34 (11/6/2014)
Ellie is scouted by the mysterious man from the previous episode to dress up and sing as "Ms. Marmalade" to advertise for him. Umeko's son falls ill and they fear that it might be the Spanish flu.
RECAP:
The man who noticed Ellie walking down the street approaches her and asks her where she comes from. She tells the man Scotland and he tells her that he has the perfect job for her.
Massan is walking through Senba towards Kamoi Shop when suddenly he hears someone yelling and music playing. It's in front of Kamoi Shop and as Massan notices the crowd, he can see that Yoshiko was right, Kamoi Shop is doing well. He then hears the man yelling say "Scottish singer, Ms. Marmalade!" This gets Massans attention and he looks to see who it is only to find Ellie there all dressed up in a beautiful kimono and hair style as she sings to the crowd. He comes running up to her asking her what she is doing, stopping the show. He is upset with Ellie for letting herself be put on display.
They go inside and Massan immediately blames Mr. Kamoi but as Ellie enters he is surprised to see Ellie looking so beautiful. Ellie tries to explain to Massan that he has misunderstood. She was scouted by Mr. Nabeshima from an advertisement company. He is still not happy that she allowed herself to be put on display but Ellie explains that she is doing her best to support them by finding work and Massan cannot argue with that.
Mr. Kamoi watches this whole scene and comments, which is when Massan notices all the whisky on the table. He asks what all this whisky is here for and Mr. Kamoi grins and asks him what he thinks it's there for. He also points out that Massan has been at a standstill since leaving Sumiyoshi.
Mr. Kamoi tells Mr. Nabeshima that he is of no service to him. He has almost damaged the image of Taiyo Wine and asks him to leave. He then tries to give Ellie money but Massan refuses. Mr. Kamoi tells him it's not for him its for Ellie. Massan darts out and tries to get Ellie to come with him but Mr. Kamoi calls her back to give her the money. She hesitates but takes the money and thanks him.
That night Massan is drinking at Kohinobori again and Ellie suggests that Massan ask Mr. Kamoi for another chance to work with him but Massan says that he can't do that. He has become quite drunk at this point and picks a fight again with the same man as before (I guess his name is Mune). Just as things are about to get violent, Yoshiko comes in and stops the fight. Turns out that Mune is Yoshiko's husband!
Ellie takes Massan home and puts him in bed when someone comes knocking loudly at the door. She goes to see who it is and finds Catherine, Momoko and Umeko with her son. They say that he has caught the Spanish flu and since Ellie's father was a doctor, they were hoping she could help.
She checks the boy's symptoms but it turns out that it's probably not the Spanish flu as his fever is low and he doesn't feel any pain. She asks if they have lemon and honey so she can make some cold medicine for him but they don't have any lemons. She then comes up with the idea to use the marmalade they made instead and everyone but Ellie runs out to get various supplies while she comforts the boy.
