Recap - Massan Week 6, Ep 31

Massan

Week 6: "He who gives to another bestows on himself"

Episode 31 (11/3/2014)
Sorry for getting behind on these recaps! Three-day weekends always throw me off my regular schedule! Anyway, in today's episode we get to see how things are going now that Massan has left Sumiyoshi but it is not looking too good at this point.

RECAP:
It's been two weeks since Massan left Sumiyoshi and things are not looking good. They are running low on food and have very little money left.

Massan has been going to interview after interview to find a new job but so far nothing has stuck. Today he is off to another interview.

Later, Catherine and the two other ladies are over for their regular chatting when Massan returns from his interview. Unfortunately, he wasn't hired this time either. He tells Ellie that the work just didn't suit him.

Back at Kamoi Shop, things appear to be moving along smoothly with the reproduction of Taiyo Wine and it looks like Mr. Kamoi is even getting starting on his own whisky business.

Back at Massan and Ellie's home, they are eating what little food they have for dinner. Massan complains that they only have "takuan" (pickled raddish). Ellie explains that they have to cut back so that is all they have. Catherine and the other two ladies then come visit (Massan is quick to make them feel unwelcome), and bring some potatoes and eggs to give to Ellie. Ellie is so grateful for the gesture and Catherine responds saying "nasake wa hito no tamenarazu" (He who gives to another bestows on himself). Massan argues with the three ladies for their "unnecessary" act of charity and they finally leave.

Ellie is upset with Massan for his attitude toward her friends but Massan tells her "bushi wa kuwanedo takayouji" (a samurai pretends he has eaten well when he has no food). Just as he says this, his stomach begins to growl. Ellie tells Massan that she will find work then. Massan is against that idea as he believes that a woman should remain at home to do housework, not cause a fuss and just listen to what her husband has to say. If she doesn't want to listen then she should just leave.

Massan has yet again gone too far and Ellie is furious. She calls him an "idiot" and leaves. It's raining outside so Massan begins to worry about her and when he finally goes out to find her, he finds that she is just outside the out under the eaves. He tries to apologize but Ellie is tired of forgiving him so easily. However, they don't have any time to argue because the land lady that they are renting their house from is coming to collect the rent.

Massan hides as Ellie tries to make an excuse saying that Massan is very ill so he is unable to come to the door but the land lady knows right away that she is lying and eventually gives them three more days to come up with the money. At this point, there is no other option than for Ellie to try working herself.
