Week 4: "Every Jack has his Jill"

Episode 24 (10/25/2014)

Despite Mr. Tanaka giving him the go ahead, Massan declined Mr. Kamoi's offer. Ellie is upset that he did not talk with her about this before making such a big decision.

RECAP:

Mr. Tanaka notices that something is bothering Massan at work and asks if Mr. Kamoi asked him to come work with him at Kamoi Shop. He then takes Massan to a nearby restaurant and tells him that he can go work with Mr. Kamoi if that is what he wants to do. He explains that Mr. Kamoi is a very charismatic person who easily draws people to him. He really did want to be the first to make whisky but the reality is that they can’t get the financing they need and some of their employees are against the idea. 

He tells Massan again to not worry about anything and to go work for Kamoi Shop and follow his dream. 

Massan comes home to Ellie singing as she waits for him. Ellie can see that something is bothering him and they sit down on the porch to talk. She asks him if she is doing enough as a wife and Massan tells her that just being with him is enough for him. 

The next day, Massan visits the Kamoi shop and Mr. Kamoi shows him the completed advertisement poster for Taiyo Wine. It is a black and white poster with only the glass of wine being red. Mr. Kamoi then asks Massan if he has made a decision regarding his offer to which Massan responds that he will continue to work at Sumiyoshi. Mr. Kamoi expected this response and accepts it. He then asks Massan if it would be okay to ask Ellie to help him out. 

Massan returns home clearly upset. He tells Ellie that Mr. Kamoi asked if he could ask Ellie to be a model for another Taiyo Wine poster, assuming that he means for Ellie to pose nude for the photo like the Japanese model. He berates himself for letting Mr. Kamoi make a fool of him and cannot believe he would even consider working for Mr. Kamoi. Ellie asks if that was why he was upset the other night and Massan finally explains it to her. She upset to find out that he had made the decision on his own without talking with her about it. 

Massan says that if he would have talked to Ellie about it that she would have probably told him to go work with Mr. Kamoi and explains that he has an obligation to work with Sumiyoshi since they have done so much for him. He says that the difference between obligations and desires are important to Japanese people and foreign people like Ellie wouldn’t understand. Naturally, this hurts her and she yells at him saying that he is the only one making a fool of himself.
