Recap - Massan Week 3, Ep 17

Massan

Week 3: "Home is where you make it"

Episode 17 (10/17/2014)
Today's episode is full of misunderstandings and frustration as Ellie cannot understand why Massan was out late last night drinking "for work." Massan is also finally able to make some small progress in reducing the costs of his whisky making plan.
RECAP:
The morning after Massan comes home drunk, Ellie is trying to wake him up and when he finally does, he is in such a rush to get to work that he doesn't have any time to eat breakfast, let alone explain last night.

Ellie cannot understand how drinking and entertaining could be part of work and thinks back to Yuko's words that a good wife in Japan is one who can do all the housework well. She worries that this is just the way things are as a wife in Japan.

Massan immediately heads off to a small factory called, Sado Factory.

Meanwhile, Ellie decides to seek out Mr. Kamoi since he had always told her before that if she ever needs anything, to come see him any time. Using the address of his shop printed on a matchbox, she tries to find her way to his shop. People everywhere gawk at her as she walks through town, though no one is willing to help her when she asks. It begins to rain and she takes cover under the eaves of one of the shops to wait it out, tears in her eyes, when Mr. Kamoi suddenly notices her.

Mr. Kamoi is so pleased that she came all this way to see him and invites her to his shop. When inside, she notices a large bottle that looks similar to the two smaller bottles of perfume she received from him before. He explains that he had it made to suit her tastes and that it will be used for fruit syrup. That was the reason he asked her opinion about the perfume bottles the other day.

Back at the small factory, Massan asks them if they can make a potstill for him. He believes this is the only place that can do it and he shows the master his drawings for what he needs.

At the same time, Ellie has Mr. Kamoi try the rice she made, which she brought as onigiri (rice balls). As he tastes it he tells her "It's delicious!" and that he is envious of Massan for being able to eat such good food all the time. She tells him that, actually, Massan hasn't tried it yet since he has been so busy lately at work, but she is very happy to hear him say it is delicious. Mr. Kamoi mentions about last night and how Massan has been working so hard to make his whisky and Ellie realizes that Massan's entertaining last night really was for work.

Massan is still at the factory trying to explain the potstill to the master but the master says that he cannot make the potstill within his budget and asks him to leave. Massan gets an idea and immediate heads back to his company to grab his whisky. When he returns to the factory, he has the master try the whisky and unfortunately the master says he does not know what good whisky tastes like so he cannot judge if it is good or not, and asks why Massan is going through so much trouble to make this whisky. Massan replies that he wants to be the first to share the amazing flavor of whisky to the Japanese people. The master starts to take to the idea and offers to make the potstill and Massan cannot thank him enough.

Mr. Kamoi is walking Ellie home as they sing the song "Home! Sweet Home!" in Japanese. Just as they hug each other to say goodbye, Massan happens to see them as he has also just come home.
