Recap - Massan Week 3, Ep 14

Massan

Week 3: "Home is where you make it"

Episode 14 (10/14/2014)

Our surprise visitor, Yuko, begins to show a tiny bit of compassion to Ellie today. Meanwhile, Ellie is still struggling to make rice and ends up with either rice porridge or burnt rice. We also see that she is not the only one in the area with an international marriage!

RECAP:
Ellie comes to the front door to see Yuko there bringing a housewarming gift, two rice bowls for her and Massan. Yuko says that she heard from her father about the troubles that Ellie had to go through to come to Japan with Massan and says that she has given up fighting for Massan. She apologizes for her behavior before and then quickly returns home. After she leaves, Ellie realizes that she completely forgot the rice she was cooking and finds that it has burnt.

At the same time, Massan has begun experimenting on his whisky making process and everyone seems to be very interested in his progress. That is, everyone except for Mr. Yaguchi, the managing director of the company. He tells Massan that if he wants to make whisky, he needs to submit a document that states his whole plan. No matter how much his experimenting succeeds, he wont be able to make whisky until he submits the plan. Mr. Tanaka tries to help Massan out by telling Mr. Yaguchi that Massan will submit the document within a week.

During his lunch break, Massan eats his bento lunch with Ellie. Ellie apologizes for failing yet again at making proper rice and asks if he can show her how to make it, but he replies that he has to work late tonight so he wont be able to.

After lunch, Ellie stops by to ask Yuko if she would just teach her how to make rice, but Yuko is not quite ready to get that close to Ellie yet and just tells her an old Japanese saying for making rice, "hajime chorochoro, naka pappa, akago naitemo futa toruna."

Ellie repeats the phrase in her head as she walks home trying to figure out its meaning and once she reaches her house, she sees that a police officer is waiting outside her home. It turns out he is going door to door to collect census information and just needs her and Massan's name. He then recommends her to introduce herself to "Catherine."

He takes her to the church where she can meet Catherine and when she goes in she finds Taneko there singing with some children. She asks Taneko if Catherine is there, to which Taneko responds that she is Catherine. She then explains that she is married to a British man named Charlie and changed her name to sound more fitting with her husbands name. Catherine (Taneko) then teaches Ellie some Japanese, specifically about the various terms that mean "husband" and "wife" in and Ellie becomes concerned about the idea that she is just a "housemaid" and Massan is like a "king" of the household.

She waits for Massan to come home that night and expresses her concern about the dynamics between a husband and wife in Japan but Massan reassures her that even though the Japanese word might sound bad, he believes that they are simply partners for life and that neither is superior to the other. Ellie is satisfied with that answer and tells Massan "I love you." Massan replies bashfully with a very quiet "I love you" in return but Ellie makes him say it louder to which he adorably stands to get closer to her and says it just a little bit louder for her.
