Recap - Massan Week 2, Ep 7

Massan

Week 2: "Bad luck often brings good luck"

Episode 7 (10/6/2014)

Sorry for taking time to post this episode's recap. We have had a typhoon blow through the country causing NHK to change their broadcast schedule so I wasn't able to watch the show until this evening. We had a lot happen in this episode as Massan and Ellie head to Osaka to Massan's previous workplace.

RECAP:
Massan brings Ellie back to the house to tell his family that they will be leaving for Osaka so he can work at his previous workplace, Sumiyoshi Distillery that makes various kinds of liquor. Before leaving, Ellie tells his mother that she will do her very best to learn the ways of Japanese life so that she can be a good wife to "Masaharu san". Massan's mother begins to tear up and quickly leaves the room. Massan's father then addresses Ellie and tells her to take care of his son and wishes them both well. Of course Ellie responds by giving him a big hug!

Just before they board the train, Sumire runs up to them to hand Ellie something from Massan's mother. She opens it to find that it is a pair of chopsticks. In the train she tells Massan that it is homework from his mother. His mother is telling her to practice hard to learn how to use them.

Ellie tells Massan that she will do everything that she can to learn the ways of Japanese life because she wants to stay by his side forever. She has been referring to Massan as "Masaharu san" but slips when talking to him on the train and accidentally calls him "Massan" for the first time. She explains that it is difficult to say "Masaharu san" and asks if it is okay to call him "Massan" and thus it becomes his nickname. (Side note: Up until today's episode, Ellie always called Massan by his full first name, Masaharu.)

Once they arrive in Osaka, they are in very good spirits and Massan tells Ellie that the president of Sumiyoshi has a daughter who can become a good friend to her. She is very excited about this.

They finally make it to Sumiyoshi and everyone is very excited to see Massan (I guess Ellie got left behind somewhere?). Even the president's daughter, Yuko Tanaka (actress: Saki Aibu), comes running out to see him. It looks like she has some feelings for Massan with the way that she talks to him. They finally notice Ellie who just arrives as they are throwing Massan up in the air cheering. The president, Daisaku Tanaka (actor: Kiyoshi Nishikawa), goes up to her to ask her why she is here and Massan runs up to explain that she is his wife. This stuns everyone, and Yuko rushes off in frustration.

Back at Mr. Tanaka's home, he talks to his family about how he is surprised as well about Massan's wife. It appears that Yuko was expecting more than just being old friends with Massan.
