Massan
Week 2: "Bad luck often brings good luck"
Episode 10 (10/9/2014)
Today Yuko speaks her mind and makes it very clear how she feels about Massan and his marriage to Ellie. If she has to give up something, so does he...
RECAP:
Ellie is practicing using her chopsticks and she is finally able to move one of the beans from one dish to the other successfully. She is so thrilled about this and it gives her the confidence to go talk to Yuko.
Ellie finds Yuko in the kitchen and although Yuko gives her the cold shoulder, she is finally able to sit down and talk with her. She tells Yuko that she married Massan out of love and apologized for any pain that may have caused her. She asks that Yuko also helps Massan accomplish his dream. She also has one more question..."Does she like Massan?" Yuko protects her pride and tells Ellie that it was arranged by her parents so no, she did not like Massan. It then looks like Ellie and Yuko have made amends so Ellie excuses herself to go tell Massan.
Once she finds and tells Massan the good news, they immediately rush to Yuko to confirm it's true. Yuko confirms that she has given up on marrying Massan but in return she expects Massan to give up something very important to him as well, making whisky at her family's company. Massan runs to Yuko and pleads on his hands and knees for her to understand that he did not realize that he agreed to marriage. As Yuko will not budge, he then gets angry with her an calls her unreasonable. She responds saying that if he really wants to make his whisky, then he will have to make it somewhere else.
As Yuko storms out (and her family follows), Massan falls to the ground and begins to sob as Ellie comes to his side to comfort him.
Later that night, Ellie goes out to find Massan and finds him in his research lab staring blankly at his diagram of the whisky making process. Is all hope lost for his dream of making whisky in Japan?
