Massan
Week 2: "Bad luck often brings good luck"
Episode 11 (10/10/2014)
We had some refreshingly comical moments in today's episode which was nice after all the conflict that has been going on up until now. I think my favorite character at this point is, hands down, Mr. Kamoi! Such a funny and interesting character!
RECAP:
Ellie peers through the door at Massan who is deep in thought as he thinks back to the hard times he went through when he arrived in Scotland. He was so set on his dream of making whisky but none of the distilleries around town would allow him in. Finally, after he waited for what looked like an entire day in the rain, one distillery finally allowed him in to learn about the whisky making process. While studying at the distillery, he became closer to Ellie and you could see their relationship develop.
Back in the present, the door opens and Ellie walks in. She apologizes for causing so much trouble for Massan since she came with him to Japan. Massan tells her that she has done nothing wrong. It looks like he will have to give up making whisky if he must quit working at Sumiyoshi Distilleries. Ellie disagrees and tells him that he cannot quit, he absolutely cannot give up on making whisky. He has done nothing wrong and he had made a promise to his father to make his dream a reality. This gives Massan renewed confidence and it looks like he will keep striving toward his dream.
The next day, Ellie goes to the kitchen and asks to help Yuko with preparing the meal. Of course, Yuko will have none of that so Ellie just does what she can and helps set the table. As they all start eating, Ellie takes a sip of her miso soup and does her best not to give a strange face at the taste (Yuko added extra soy sauce to her soup).
Mr. Kamoi starts asking Massan how his whisky making is going. He starts firing off question after question about the materials needed, costs, sale prices, etc., to which Massan is unable to answer anything. Mr. Kamoi gets upset and yells at him to get working on it! He doesn't like people who dawdle around when they have something they need to do! He then begins to feed his precious goldfish.
Later, Ellie is hanging laundry outside when Yuko walks by. Ellie asks her if she can prepare dinner tonight for everyone and Yuko complies with a smirk on her face.
