Massan
Week 7: "Let sleeping dogs lie"
Episode 39 (11/12/2014)
Mr. Kamoi asks Ellie to interpret for him and surprises Massan when she comes home with a recruitment letter looking for an expert in whisky making. He is stubborn though and tries to think of a way to make money so he can make whisky on his own.
RECAP:
Mr. Kurosawa shows up at the Church after Ellie's music lessons and asks her if she can come with him to Kamoi Shop. Mr. Kamoi then asks her if she can do some interpreting for him as he has a meeting with a Scottish man who is the Hong Kong branch manager of a British trading company.
The next day, Ellie heads to Kamoi Shop to interpret for Mr. Kamoi. During the meeting, the Scottish man, Mr. Smith, asks about Mr. Kamoi's interest in importing whisky but Mr. Kamoi is not interested in importing the whisky but rather making his own whisky to sell in Japan. Therefore, he is looking for someone who knows how to do so.
Once Ellie returns home she talks to Massan about her day. She has to write a clean copy of the recruitment documents and she ends up showing them to Massan who is shocked when he sees the details, including the high pay.
Ellie tries to encourage him to go see Mr. Kamoi to ask for a second chance to make whisky with him but Massan is still stubborn and says he can't. He is quite worked up though and even tries singing upside down to calm his nerves. Ellie suggests that he come with her tomorrow to talk to Mr. Kamoi but Massan refuses and says that he will figure out a way to make whisky on his own.
Catherine then shows up with bread she bought which is the same bread that was given to Ellie the other day from Mr. Nonomura. Massan grabs the bread and stomps out of the house to go to Kohinobori.
The next day, Ellie heads back to Kamoi Shop to give Mr. Kamoi the final copy of the recruitment letter. Mr. Kamoi asks what Massan said when he saw the letter and Ellie tells him that Massan stood on his head and sang upside down. Mr. Kamoi laughs and Ellie asks why he wants to make whisky. He responds that he wants to shock Japan with it. He tells her that life is an adventure and Ellie tells him that her own father used to say the same thing. Mr. Kamoi tells Ellie that he can be like a Japanese father to her and asks her which person she likes more, him or Massan, to which she responds she likes Massan more.
Massan is washing dishes at Kohinobori when he gets an idea. He starts asking everyone if they like bread and then suddenly says that he has to leave work early today and heads home. Once Ellie gets home she sees that he is making something out of bricks. He explains that he is making a brick oven to make bread to sell. Bread is becoming more popular in Japan so he thinks he can sell bread to make money so that he can make whisky in the future.
Umeko then shows up at their house and tells them that there is a little girl crying at the front of their house. When they go look they find Sachiko there crying. The police officer comes by asking if the girl is lost and then Natsu and Yukiko show up as well looking for her.
