Massan
Week 7: "Let sleeping dogs lie"
Episode 37 (11/10/2014)
Today we are introduced to the Nonomura family. Massan and Ellie visit their home to ask for more time but Mr. Nonomura offer's Ellie an opportunity.
RECAP:
Ellie and Massan are sitting at a table with the landlord, Mr. Nonomura, of the house they are renting. Mr. Nonomura asks Massan what he does for work. Massan explains that he had recently quit his job at Sumiyoshi Distillery and is now working at a local restaurant washing dishes. He also talks about how he wants to make whisky and even went to Scotland to study for it.
Ellie asks that Mr. Nonomura give them just a little more time to pay the rent but he doesn't look like he wants to do that.
Two girls come running into the room and Ellie immediately recognizes them from their singing lessons at the church. Mr. Nonomura has them introduce themselves as Sachiko and Natsu and the older sister, Sachiko, is still very reserved compared to her younger sister, Natsu. The girls were fighting over Sachiko's doll and Ellie offers to make another doll just like it with Natsu.
As Mr. Nonomura watches this he offers to give them more time to pay their rent in exchange for Ellie teaching his two daughters English. Ellie accepts and Natsu is thrilled.
Mr. Nonomura has Sachiko call their mother but Sachiko calls her by her first name, Yukiko. He scolds her for it and she then calls for her by saying, "Mother!" like she was asked to. Yukiko comes in and is introduced as Mr. Nonomura's wife. He tells Ellie that Yukiko will handle all the details as he has to leave to tend to his work.
Massan and Ellie return and head to Kohinobori where Ellie shares a gift of bread that was given to her by the Nonomura family. Yoshi give Massan a hard time for not finding a better job so that Ellie doesn't have to work so hard. They start talking about Mr. Nonomura and Catherine tells Ellie about how his previous wife had died from illness and he had just remarried about a half a year ago. Yoshi then says that it seems that Natsu gets along well with Yukiko but Sachiko is still getting over the loss of her mother so she hasn't accepted Yukiko yet. This information helps Ellie understand why Sachiko is the way she is.
For Sachiko, the piano is a big reminder of her mother which is why she dislikes playing it or even listening to the piano.
Ellie returns home and expresses her concern for Yukiko and Massan warns her not to involve herself, "Let sleeping dogs lie."
It's the first day of English lessons and Ellie is trying to teach the girls the alphabet but Sachiko is just not into it. Ellie then tries to play the piano while singing the alphabet song but this only makes things worse. Sachiko ends up leaving the room as Natsu starts talking about their mother.
Later, Ellie talks with Yukiko and asks if it is alright to have the lessons at her house. Yukiko then explains her past and how she married Mr. Nonomura to help take care of the girls but instead, Sachiko ended up disliking her. Mr. Nonomura had mentioned that if things to not get any better, maybe it is best if they separate. Ellie urges her to keep trying. If Sachiko got along with her before then with time they get along again.
That night, Ellie tries to talk to Massan about Yukiko but Massan reminds her not to involve herself in other people's business. Ellie tells him to just believe in her as she smiles.
