Recap - Massan Week 4, Ep 20

Massan

Week 4: "Every Jack has his Jill"

Episode 20 (10/21/2014)
Today, Ellie tries her best to wrap her head around the Japanese tradition of "omiai" (arranged marriages) and tries to help Yuko. Meanwhile, Massan is working diligently to prove the safety of Taiyo Wine.

RECAP:
Ellie is out again chatting with her neighbor friends when she brings up "omiai" (arranged marriages). Catherine is with Ellie in thinking that love is important in a relationship. They talk about Yuko's situation in which her potential partner is from Namihana Bank. Umeko, Momoko, and Catherine all agree that it sounds like a good arrangement as money is important for married life.

Back at Sumiyoshi Distillery, no one is ordering Kamoi Shop's wine, stopping its production, and there are even stacks of returned wine. In Massan's research lab, Massan is trying to prove the safety of the wine. If they can't restart the production of Taiyo Wine, the company will go bankrupt.

Ellie visits the Tanaka household and learns Japanese cooking from Yuko. While they are working Ellie asks Yuko about her arranged marriage. She asks if she really wants to marry and Yuko hesitates at first but then says that it has already been decided.

Ellie then goes to see Massan in his lab to talk to him about Yuko's predicament. Massan is so focused on his research that he is not really able to help Ellie but just then one of the wine bottles exploded which provided the proof he needed.

A few days later, Mr. Kamoi comes to Sumiyoshi Distillery where Massan explains the results of his research giving him proof that Taiyo Wine is 100% safe. Mr. Kamoi is pleased with this and tells Massan to get ready to come with him but won't tell him where.

It's lunch time at Sumiyoshi and Yoshiko is joking around about the sardines dish they are eating and arranged marriages.

Meanwhile, Yuko is in her room with a troubled look as she thinks to herself, when her mother comes in to give her a kimono she had made for her "omiai." She tries it on and looks beautiful in it and her parents and Ellie all compliment her.

Later, Ellie finds Yuko in the yard singing and asks her again if she really wants to marry. Yuko finally admits that she is not ready to marry yet. She has something else that she would like to do first. She would like to become an English typist. Ellie is delighted to hear that Yuko can speak even a little English and tells her that if she does not want to marry, it's better that she doesn't go through with it. Yuko responds that she is envious of Ellie.
