Recap - Massan Week 4, Ep 19

Massan

Week 4: "Every Jack has his Jill"

Episode 19 (10/20/2014)
Catherine says some things to Ellie that cause her to become suspicious of Massan as he says he has to stay late at work again. I usually like Catherine's character but today was not my favorite...

RECAP:
It's now the middle of summer and the rainy season has begun. Ellie has now become good friends with Catherine and the two neighbor ladies, Umeko and Momoko to the point that they are enjoying some idle gossiping.

Massan is in high spirits as he tells Ellie that things are coming along well with the plans to make the pot stills before he heads off to work. Massan meets with Mr. Tanaka, Mr. Yaguchi, and Mr. Sasazuka of Namihana Bank at the Sado Factory. They have a great set of plans for making the pot stills but financing it is still a problem. They also run into the problem of where to place the two pot stills.

Ellie is chatting with the neighbor ladies when Catherine mentions that once a man is doing exceptionally well at work, you have to be careful that he doesn't start having an affair. Ellie insists that Massan is not that kind of person.

At Sumiyoshi Distillery, Massan and Mr. Tanaka return and Yoshiko relays a message from Mr. Kamoi that their wine bottles have been exploding at restaurants all over Osaka and that the restaurants are now refusing to do any business with the Kamoi shop for the time being.

They immediately rush over to the Kamoi shop, where Mr. Kamoi asks Massan if he knows why the bottles are exploding. Massan explains the reason for the explosions and assures everyone that his whisky shouldn't have the same problem. Mr. Kamoi is not satisfied with such an unsure statement and tells Massan that he must provide proof, therefore putting his whisky making on hold.

Massan rushes home to pick up some books and materials and tells Ellie that he will probably have to stay the night at the company tonight but won't explain exactly why. He even tells her that he isn't really in the right frame of mind to hug her or say "I love you."

This concerns Ellie as she thinks back to what Catherine said about men starting affairs once they are successful at work. At that exact time, Catherine stops by after seeing Massan rush off and asks Ellie where he is going. She tells her that he is probably going to stay at work tonight and Catherine starts asking if she really thinks he will stay at work and that he isn't going to see some other woman. This upsets Ellie even more and she kicks Catherine out.

Ellie then takes some food and a change of clothes to Massan's work and notices Massan in his lab talking and laughing with Yuko. She then sees Massan as he leans in to tell something quietly to Yuko but to Ellie it looks like he kissed her. She stumbles a bit causing some things to fall which catches the attention of Yuko and Massan. Yuko notices the awkward situation and invites Ellie to have dinner at their house.

While eating, Ellie tells Yuko that Massan has changed since coming to Japan. He doesn't say "I love you" or hug her anymore and when she saw him with Yuko, he looked like he was having such a good time. Yuko explains that that just means that Massan can confide in Ellie. He doesn't need to hide his true feelings from her. This makes Ellie feel much better.

Yuko's mother and father then come in with big news for Yuko about a prospective marriage proposal. Yuko tries to look happy about this but Ellie starts to doubt whether she is truly happy.
