Week 12: "If winter comes, can spring be far behind?"
Episode 67 - 72 (12/15/2014 - 12/20/2014)
In an attempt to catch up on recapping, recaps for week 12 and week 13 will be done in two weekly posts rather than single episode posts. Thanks! :)
RECAP:
Ellie is still in the hospital but Catherine comes by with lots of food that she made with Umeko and Momoko. Massan still hasn't returned to the hospital so they end up eating without him. As they are enjoying their dinner, Massan finally returns and begins to talk to Eichiro about work. Ellie tries to tell him that he doesn't need to continue taking time off, that he can return to work if he needs to but Massan says that it's not necessary. As they joke, Massan sees Ellie's smile and starts to tear up which both Eichiro and Catherine are quick to notice. Catherine asks if Eichiro will walk home with her and once they get to Massan and Ellie's home, she asks Eichiro if he is hiding anything. Back at the hospital, Ellie can also sense that something is wrong with Massan.
One week later, Ellie returns home from the hospital. As Massan is hanging laundry, he see the baby cradle he made and is reminded of the pain of losing the baby. Eichiro returns home from work and Massan follows him to his room to talk. He hasn't told Ellie about what the doctor said about her not being able to have a child and asks Eichiro not to tell anyone. However, Eichiro has already told Catherine and she shows up at the house and slyly passes a message to meet Massan at Kohinobori to talk. That night after dinner, Massan returns to Eichiro's room and tells him that he truly appreciates Eichiro's help. Eichiro tells Massan that he should really tell Ellie the truth but Massan is strongly against it. Eichiro then tells Massan that things at the distillery are not going so well without him and that Mr. Kamoi is planning to have the official tour of the distillery as planned.
The next day, after a meeting at Kamoi Shop, Eichiro shows up to talk to his father about postponing the tour of the distillery so that Massan can spend more time with Ellie but Mr. Kamoi refuses to postpone and this causes a big argument between the two. Eichiro mentions that Ellie cannot have children anymore, shocking his father. He mentions that Massan is having a hard time telling Ellie, who still doesn't know, and pleads with his father to postpone but his father does not budge, making Eichiro furious as he storms out of the room.
Things are still not going well at the Yamazaki distillery as they prepare for the official tour. At Massan and Ellie's home, Ellie is writing a letter to her mother while Massan is talking with Catherine at Kohinobori about not talking to Ellie about her condition. Once Massan returns home he sees Ellie writing the letter. Feeling guilty he finally tells Ellie that they cannot have children and Ellie is shocked and incredulous. Once it finally sinks in that he is telling the truth, she retreats to their bedroom alone and begins to grieve. She begins throwing things that were given for the baby out in the yard but quickly regrets in and goes out to retrieve them. Eichiro is alone in the kitchen preparing dinner and Ellie is in the yard in a depressed daze as Massan decidedly stands up and goes out to the yard to apologize to her. He explains that they were actually saved by the baby they lost because if she were to go through with her pregnancy, she would have likely lost her own life. He tells her that they will get through this and they hug.
Mr. Kamoi comes by bringing pork cutlets and tells Eichiro to have Massan come back to work from tomorrow. When Eichiro passes on the information to Massan, Ellie asks about the official tour of the distillery and Ellie is elated at the news and encourages them to do their best.
The next day, Massan returns to work an apologizes for all the trouble he caused by being absent for so long. Back at home, Ellie is doing laundry when she thinks back to the celebration they had at Kohinobori and hearing that "Japanese wives are supposed to give birth to children..." and begins to tear up. Umeko and Momoko then show up bringing food that is supposed to be good for fertility (not knowing about Ellie's condition) and as they both ramble on about the different foods, Ellie cannot handle it anymore and yells at them to stop and then immediately apologizes for it. Catherine shows up and comforts her telling her that she too cannot have children which caused her first husband to divorce her but she was able to get through that situation and when Ellie asks her how, she tells Ellie that only Massan has the answer to that question.
Things are hectic at the distillery as everyone is frantically trying to prepare everything in time for the tour. Mr. Kamoi pays a visit to Ellie at home and apologizes for making Massan work during this difficult time for her. Ellie assures him that it is no problem, she is fine and it makes her happy to see Massan and Eichiro so happy working together. She asks Mr. Kamoi about his late wife and what she was like and he begins to tell her that she was kind but then suddenly gets up to leave but Ellie stops him and tells him that he should explain everything to Eichiro.
Mr. Kamoi finally gets up the nerve to talk to Eichiro about his mother and calls him into his office. Ellie accompanies Eichiro and Eichiro starts telling his father about how he enjoys his work at the distillery so far and would even like to go to Scotland to study how to make whisky. Mr. Kamoi surprises Eichiro by telling him that his mother would be proud of him and explains the reason he has been so strict about the date of the official tour as it is the anniversary of Eichiro's mother's death. He explains that 10 years ago when he was getting ready release Taiyo wine, he had wanted to postpone because of his wife falling ill but she would not allow him to postpone and promised that if he could make his dream come true, then she will become well again. However, she did not get better and her parting words were to take care of Eichiro and to amaze Japan. Mr. Kamoi apologizes to Eichiro for not telling him all of this sooner but Eichiro quickly forgives him and they hug.
The day of the official tour of the distillery comes and as it begins, Mr. Kamoi stands up in front of one of the potstills to give his opening speech and then passes the stage to his son who gives a very passionate speech about whisky and the whisky they are making at the distillery, causing the whole audience to clap and cheer. Ellie then turns to Massan and tells him that she really wants to become a mother. She wants to raise a child of her own and so they decided to adopt a child, who they name Emma ("E" for Ellie and "ma" for Masaharu).
