Week 10: "It is darkest under the lamp post"
Episode 60 (12/6/2014)
Toshio stays with Massan for a bit and meets Mr. Kamoi and we flash forward a few years to see that the Yamazaki distillery is almost complete. Ellie also gives Massan some surprising news!
RECAP:
Ellie sent a letter to Toshio asking him to come help Massan but once Toshio arrives and finds out that Massan knew nothing of the letter, he gets discouraged and wants to return to Hiroshima. Massan asks him what his father said about his coming here.
Toshio tells him that Sumire said to go and help Massan. His father also ask him to go see how Massan was doing and Sanae just told him to do as he pleases. Toshio asks Massan what he should do but Massan doesn't have an answer for him so Toshio decides to leave. He was personally asks by Massan's father and although he was reluctant, he finally had decided to come but so far hasn't really felt welcomed.
Ellie tries to stops Toshio though and tells him that she would like him to meet Mr. Kamoi but with Massan still hesitating, Toshio gets up to go. Ellie grabs him before he can leave and tells him to at least have dinner and he is suddenly happy to stay.
Toshio ends up staying the night and the next day, Massan takes him to meet Mr. Kamoi. Mr. Kamoi asks him if he has any interest in Western liquors and what he thinks about whisky but Toshio tells him that he has no interest at all in Western liquors. However, no one can beat his skills in making sake. Mr. Kamoi then asks if he has any special talents but Toshio refuses to do anything and goes to leave.
Massan stops them and the two bicker as Mr. Kamoi decides that he like Toshio and says that he makes a good partner for Massan.
Toshio heads back to Hiroshima but says he will return again. He gives Ellie a letter from Sumire and hugs him goodbye.
The letter says that Massan's father was very happy to receive the letter from her and that although her mother won't admit it, she thinks she is praying for Massan's success as well. She tells Ellie to take care of herself and Massan. As they read the letter, Massan and Ellie are interrupted by Catherine and the girls.
We then flash forward to 3 and a half years later where the Yamazaki distillery in nearing completion. They are putting together one of the potstills and as it is pieced together, everyone cheers. Ellie shows up and yells out to Massan and congratulates him. She also adds that she is pregnant. Massan is elated at the news and they hug.
