Massan
Week 10: "It is darkest under the lamp post"
Episode 59
(12/5/2014)
Massan and Mr. Kamoi are making progress with their whisky plans
and Ellie finishes her renovations around the house.
RECAP:
Massan and Ellie are in awe at the beautiful misty scenery
before them. They had no idea such a place could exist in Yamazaki.
At the same time, Mr. Kamoi has completed his arrangement of the
different buildings for the new distillery.
The next day, Massan is telling Mr. Kamoi about the place he
visited yesterday and how it's conditions might actually be alright to make whisky
but Mr. Kamoi didn't choose Yamazaki for its conditions, he chose it because it
was near the railways. Massan thinks he understands what Mr. Kamoi means: By
being close to a train station, they can save a lot on the transportation of
materials. This isn't the reason Mr. Kamoi was thinking though. His reason for
wanting to be near the train station is for advertisement purposes. Many people
will pass by the distillery and they can even allow people to come inside and
see the whisky making process. That is why it is important that they have the
passageway run along the "heart" of the whisky process, the
potstills.
That night when Massan returns home he is still amazed by Mr.
Kamoi's idea and tells Ellie about it and says that Mr. Kamoi is a Martian.
Ellie tells him that with Massan's skills to make whisky and Mr. Kamoi's skills
to sell, they make a perfect combination.
The next day, Massan leaves for Yamazaki to do some more tests
and tells Ellie he will be gone for 4 - 5 days. While he is gone, Ellie begins
construction on her renovations.
Massan is walking through the mountain area doing various tests
in Yamazaki and, meanwhile, in Hiroshima, Massan's father shows Toshio a letter
to him, which is written completely in English.
A few
days later, the renovations are all complete at Massan and Ellie's home. Ellie
and her friends are preparing to test out the new gas stove they had installed
and they all cheer once it lights up successfully.
Just
then, Massan returns home and notices all the changes, including Ellie's new
hairstyle. As he walks around and sees all the changes that have been made, he
finally notices the chandelier in the dining room. Catherine tells him it was
her dream to have a chandelier in her own home and since he left everything to
Ellie to take care of she decided to help out and chose the chandelier. Massan
is upset, however, at the unnecessary spending on the
chandelier.
Once
everyone leaves and Ellie is alone with Massan she hugs him and says,
"hisashiburi" (long time no see). Someone then comes to the front
door and it turns out to be Toshio. Massan is surprised and asks what he is doing
here, and Toshio explains that he was asked to come here. Ellie invites him
into the house and once he sees the kitchen, he is amazed. She was the one who
wrote the letter to him.
