Recap - Massan Week 1, Ep 4

Massan

Week 1: "Even the hardest of hearts can be moved to tears"

Episode 4 (10/2/2014)

I feel really sad for Ellie today. She went through some pretty harsh scenes in this episode! But I must say that for all that she has been going through these past few episodes, she sure handles everything with grace!

RECAP:
The ceremony is about to begin and our couple enters the room. All eyes are staring at the blonde-haired foreigner in front of them. As Ellie sits down, the guests begin to "whisper" to each other about the rumors they heard about Ellie. She finally turns around and introduces herself politely and everyone is stunned that she can speak Japanese.

The priest then walks in to begin the ceremony and Ellie does her best to participate. She tries to follow Massan's lead but struggles a bit. When she finally goes to stand up again, her legs give out on her and she practically falls on the priest.

Everyone is served food and Massan decides it's a good time to try to introduce Ellie again properly. She says the greeting she was taught perfectly and the priest chuckles and praises her condescendingly. He then challenges her to try a Japanese bean dish and she struggles with her chopsticks as she tries to pick up one of the beans.

The kids then come running into the room playing and accidentally bump into Sumire who is carrying a sake bottle. She drops the bottle and it shatters on the floor. The girl, feeling guilty, tries to help to pick up the bottle but cuts her finger. Ellie then comes to take care of her finger and tells the boy that he should apologize to both the girl and Sumire. The boy does and the two kids are happy again.

The priest takes notice of the whole scene in front of him and declares that Ellie has a good heart. This upsets Massan's mother and she throws a fit, telling Ellie to get out. She is not welcome here.

Ellie is sitting alone and thinks back to this same situation that happened in Scotland. Massan notices her and comforts her and she begins to sing the Scottish song "Auld Lang Syne."

Later she is heard by the guests singing the Japanese version of the song to the same tune, which the kids taught her. The kids ask Ellie to sing the English version for the guests and as she begins, Massan's mother comes out and glares at Ellie.

(to be continued...)

Note: I sure wish I could add some pictures into these recaps. Does anyone know anything about adding screencaps? Specifically, the legalities of adding them? Your advice is greatly appreciated!!!

  1. Hi - literally bumped into your site, and i would just like to say "thank you, thank you" for doing an English recap of the show!

i can only guess at how strict the copyright laws are in Japan, but there are a couple of Japanese blogs that are also following Massan, and they have included screencaps in their summaries:
