Recap - Massan Week 1, Ep 2

Massan

Week 1: "Even the hardest of hearts can be moved to tears"

Episode 2 (9/30/2014)

Today's episode focused mainly on the background story to Massan and Ellie's relationship and how they met. We also got a glimpse of what Ellie had to sacrifice in order to come to Japan with Massan. So far things are moving at a nice slow pace which is to be expected for a 150 episode show.

RECAP:

The confrontation with Massan's mother continues as she begins to argue with Massan about his responsibilities and obligations to his family and their sake brewery. Ellie watches them anxiously as he argues back that it is his life and he will decide his own path. (Ellie is really cute here as she begins to become uncomfortable from sitting in the Japanese style for so long. I feel ya sister!)

The argument is done for now as his mother has another engagement to attend. Later that afternoon Ellie, Massan and his sister, Sumire, are in another room trying to figure out how to get his mother to accept Ellie. Sumire asks Ellie what she likes about Massan and Ellie replies "Everything," and embarrasses Massan by hugging him and saying "I love you! I love you! I love you!"

Sumire then asks how they first met and Ellie explains as we flashback to Scotland when Massan is at a Christmas party at Ellie's house. They are eating Christmas pudding and Massan finds a coin in his piece, while Ellie finds a thimble. It is said that the one who finds the coin will marry the one who finds the thimble (I am not sure if this is actually a true tradition). Ellie gets embarrassed and leaves the room.

We then fast forward a bit and see that Massan and Ellie's relationship is beginning to bloom as Massan shares his dream of making the first real whisky in Japan. We fast forward a bit more and Massan tells Ellie that he must return to Japan. Ellie is clearly upset and starts to cry but tells him that it is unfortunate but that she will never forget him and thanks him for all the time they spent together. Massan is not satisfied with that, however, and asks her to marry him. He says that he will stay in Scotland forever so that they can stay by each other's side but Ellie tells him that she will go to Japan with him. She wishes to support his dream of making whisky in Japan.

We come back to the conversation between Massan, Ellie and Sumire and Massan says that things were not so easy as they seem. Ellie's mother was also against Ellie and Massan's marriage and move to Japan...

(to be continued...)
